...Still waiting on the internet installation, which was supposed to happen on Saturday. But, as this is Spain, everything takes longer than you'd imagine. They don't stress out about anything here, to say the least. The café is about to close, so I've got to go brave the elements again, but I wanted to post some photos so you can get a feeling for Ferrol. Below are photos of the town center, the Calle Magdalena mostly, in the modernist architecture of the late 18th Century. Currently, the streets are lined with boutiques, shops of all varieties: carnecerías, pescaderías, pastelerías, papelerías, cafés, bars, and pubs. I'll let you translate the names on your own!! Ferrol is famous for these buildings. And look! It's sunny!
This is the Ayuntamiento, or town hall, situated in one of the three main plazas of the old town.
A Sweet Shop! This place was so beautiful that we had to take photos of the window display. And since it would have been incredible rude to have taken photos without entering and buying anything, we um... sampled a few things. Homemade almond cookies with apricot jam dipped in dark chocolate? I think so.
This is an antiques store we walked into, looking for a mirror. Couldn't find anything affordable, but it was in a beautiful old building, and had some really cool stuff.
We had a fellow Auxiliar, Elyse, over last night to our apartment, and made our FIRST of many communal dinners. Notice the 50 cent bottle of delicious table wine (I'm not kidding, this puts Two Buck Chuck to shame), and the fact that the apartment came with crystal stemware.... really.
Yum yum! Pasta with Chicken and a homemade tomato sauce! Plenty of bread with olive oil to keep it Spanish. Callie cooks like a goddess, so this should be a pretty delicious few months. I'm planning on bringing home as many Spanish recipes as I can and coaxing her into helping me prepare them, because unlike me, she actually knows what she's doing in the kitchen.
Ciao! (and yes, they say Ciao in Ferrol)
